Welcome to the Color Gallery!

Here are my available dye colors! Some are acid dyes, and some are fiber reactive dyes. Both can be used on protein fiber yarns (wool, silk, alpaca, nylon, etc.), but if you are ordering any plant fiber yarns (cotton, linen, tencel, bamboo, and so on), then only the fiber reactive dyes will work. Acid dyes will barely stain a plant fiber yarn. Colors ending in an A are acid dyes, and colors ending in an F are fiber reactive dyes.

You can find more information about these color samples below the gallery.

*More will always be coming as I dye more samples and get new dyes! At some point, I will try to do samples of all of the fiber reactive dyes on a plant-based yarn as well so you can get a better idea of how they will look in that type of situation... but dyeing plant fiber yarns takes a lot longer.*

Dye Color Sample Information

All of these dye color samples are low-volume kettle-dyed on 20 gram skeins of #1 sock/fingering weight yarn made from 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Recycled Nylon, at a 1% or 2% depth of shade unless otherwise noted. If dyed on yarn or roving made from other materials, or with a different dye technique or depth of shade, the colors may look slightly different. And keep in mind that everyone's computer/phone screens display colors differently! The best way is always to look in my color binder to see the samples in real life, if possible. Some dye samples may look almost identical when viewed over a screen (such as the teals), but when viewed in-person, you can see the differences much easier.

If you find a color you like, but you would prefer it darker or lighter, just send me a message at contact@yarninthewoods.com, and we can look into it! *Note that some colors are already so light or dark that we really can't go any lighter (or you wouldn't be able to see any color), or we can't go any darker (because the fibers can only soak in so much dye pigment).*

Some different dye techniques you can ask for include, but are not limited to:

  • Semi-solid kettle dyeing
  • Tonal-solid kettle dyeing
  • Multi-layer tonal kettle dyeing
  • Ombre dip-dyeing (one color or two different colors)
  • Speckles and Sprinkles (not all dyes work well with this technique)
  • Low, medium, and high-immersion Space-dyeing
  • Ice-dyeing (not all dyes work well with this technique)
  • Hand-Painting
  • Dry dye powder application
  • Or just tell me what colors you want and let me do whatever with them!
